This series of giant flowers were a creative response to the 2016 Dandenong Ranges Open Studios exhibition theme: Micro/Macro.
It began with a reflection on a song lyric (see title) and grew into an idea about tiny hummingbirds. A few small sketches later… giant flowers started to sprout and bloom. Micro/Macro prompted Jessie to reflect on the currency of symbiosis in which organisms coexist and thrive from a symbiotic relationship.

This work was created for a series of work exhibited in the 2015 Open Studios exhibition. Each work was based on a series of Fables written by Aesop & Jean de la Fontaine. This particular piece is based on the Fable ‘The Crow & the Fox’ (See fable below). Jessie was awarded with the 2015 Dandenong Ranges Open Studios People’s Choice Award for this series of sculptures.

The Crow and The Fox
(Jean de la Fontaine)

Master Crow sat on a tree,
Holding a cheese in his beak.
Master Fox was attracted by the odour,
And tried to attract him thus.
“Mister Crow, good day to you.
You are a handsome and good looking bird!
In truth, if your song is as beautiful as your plumage,
You are the Phoenix of this forest.”
Hearing these words the Crow felt great joy,
And to demonstrate his beautiful voice,
He opened his mouth wide and let drop his prey.
The Fox seized it and said: “My good Sir,
Know that every flatterer,
Lives at the expense of those who take him seriously:
This is a lesson that is worth a cheese no doubt.”
The Crow, embarrassed and confused,
Swore, though somewhat later, that he would never
be tricked thus again.

This particular piece is based on the Fable ‘The Stag & the Vine’. (See fable below). Jessie was awarded with the 2015 Dandenong Ranges Open Studios People’s Choice Award for this series of sculptures.

The Stag and The Vine
(Jean de la Fontaine)

Hotly followed by hunter and Hound
A stag in mortal danger found
A shelter of leaves in a vine that grew
Unusually high from the ground
He was safe. As soon as the men turned to
And cursed the dogs and ceased to pursue,
The heartless stag, with no thought for the vine
That saved him, began to chew.
But the hunters heard the munching sounds.
They summoned back the pack of hounds.
When the stag again returned to the vine
He was dying of his wounds.
“Alas, let ingrates ponder well
My rightful fate,” said the stag, and fell.
And moaned in vain to dogs and men
As they moved in for the kill.
Image of all ingratitude
Was the hapless stag, the spirit rude
That brings to bear on its benefactors
A cavilling attitude.
